I am probably one of many of those out there with this complaint, but it hit me in the face today with an email exchange I was having. At one point do you find it *ok* to stop adding a polite “Hi so-and-so” or “Thank you” in an email? Personally I am unable to send an email to anyone, even if it is the 15th email in the exchange, unless I have included a greeting and a closing.
I have noticed that, especially with vendors, these manners disappear after the initial email. Personally, I find it extremely rude.
There have been times that I have sent a text to someone that I haven’t spoken to in a while and I need to ask them something and their first response is “Hi! How have you been?!” followed by the answer to my question. I have had the same reaction to these connections. With email and texting, everything has become so informal. While I understand the logic behind it, I don’t like it. I am a person and I deserve the respect of a greeting and a closing in my email correspondence, especially if you are a vendor of mine.
I would love to hear thoughts on this!
